Winter is coming: And we are here to look after your skin in these chilly months

As the colder weather slowly creeps in, so too are gradual changes to our skin. As the days go by (and get shorter), the humidity in the air, and as a result, moisture, reduces. Add to this the fact that we are starting to turn our radiators on, the changes to the external environment are slowly but surely drying out the natural oils that the skin produces, meaning that you may find your skin drier than usual in the coming months.

This winter season the priority therefore should be to keep your skin from getting dehydrated. Don’t worry, we’ve got several easy tips on how you can tweak your lifestyle and skincare routine to be winter ready.

1) Switch to a heavier moisturiser

Because you skin produces fewer oils in the winter months, it is important to use a moisturiser that is more densely packed with oils that can be easily absorbed by the skin to lock in moisture. MotherEarth’s Glow Me uses a mango-butter base, packed with nourishing levels of Omega 6 & 9, which the skin craves in winter months (Stylist)

2) Start using oil-based serums and facial oils

Oil based serums generally take longer to absorb into the skin, which is why we recommend introducing them to your night routine in the winter months. Facial oils should be applied after a gentle cleanse at night, just before bed, so that they are able to deeply penetrate and hydrate the skin overnight, allowing your skin to feel rejuvenated the next morning and ready to tackle the cold, dry atmosphere of winter.

3) Ensure you are using a gentle cleanser

Often foaming and soap-based cleansers can make your skin feel ‘squeaky clean’ but actually significantly dry out the natural oils on your skin. That is why it is important, particularly in the winter months to switch to a gentler, soap free cleanser in the winter that has a pH that more closely resembles the natural pH of your skin and is therefore less likely to dry your skin out further. Our Cleanse Me gentle, everyday cleanser will do just the trick. Made with Jojoba oil, which most closely resembles the structure of the oils that your skin naturally produces, means that the oil immediately penetrates the skin, leaving it feeling hydrated and ready for the harsh winter air.

4) Watch what’s going inside your body as well as on it: stay hydrated

What we often forget is that the skin is the largest organ of the body. This means that it is significantly influenced by our diet. It goes without saying therefore that staying hydrated and drinking lot of water will go a long way in supporting your skin this winter. Where possible, stick to lukewarm water. Also bear in mind that caffeine and alcohol both have significantly dehydrating effects on the body, so limiting consumption of both will really help.

We hope this helps you making more informed choices about your winter skincare routine as well as supports you in taking care of your holistic wellbeing this season.
